Friends, I am pleased to announce that Tenth Month 24 (10/24/09) will be the third annual International Talk Like a Quaker Day.
Basically, this is a day to use Plain Speech (thee/thy instead of you/your) and/or talk about Quaker principles, such as peace and equality.
Here are some examples:
ITLAQ Day is the 24th day of Tenth Month and it is Seventh Day (of the week). This day is also William Penn's birthday and United Nations Day.
Mind the…

Galatians Chapter 5 (The Message)
16-18My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God's Spirit. Then you won't feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day. Why don't you choose to be…

I try to follow the Quaker testimony on ordinances and being educated in Catholic schools, I bear witness that the Catholics, Roman and Orthodox, have a lot of pageantry. I think the only health plan they had was the mandatory eating of fish on Friday. I still wonder what the fast was supposed to be in parts of the world where the only animal food is fish. Those days are long over.
I have looked over Kosher rules in the Torah and Talmud and Kosher products at the store, there is…

I went along to the Labour party conference in Brighton, wearing a tee-shirt which said, 'too disabled to be...a social worker?' and handed out the plinth poem, 'For those left standing' to a number of startled politicians to remind them that one in five of the UK population is 'disabled'...by society's low expectations of us. Various journalists also got the poem. Health should not be a determining factor in retention in any of the professions in England, as is currently the case.

Just returned from the quarterly meeting for the Pacific NW quarter of North Pacific yearly meeting (there's a mouthful!) At home we just call it Lazy F, because that is the retreat center where it's held.
I felt my daughter's absence quite intensely but I did find spiritual recharge as well. God bless my fellow worshippers. One of them shared a jewel that still glistens (reflecting Light)-- His Four Powers 1) the great mystery 2) the incredible power of connectedness 3) the power of…

Hello Friends,
I have searched for answers to this question, but have found yet no one really discussing this very much. The topic: Simplicity in Food. I suppose this could be a discussion topic in the Plainness and Simplicity group, but I don't know if it would be welcome there, and so, I hesitate to clutter that page unnecessarily. I will say that I feel a commonality between what seems to be a call to me to eat simply and Quaker Jane's description of why she went…

I have been looking forward to quarterly meeting with spiritual hunger. Without a meeting community or the gift of regular monthly meetings, the gatherings I attend have great importance to me.
This will be my first quarterly meeting without my daughter. As she has matured she has needed less and less of me. In the last few meetings I had but a few glimpses of her, as we had parallel experiences at the quarterly meeting. This time I won't even have the glimpses. But I will probably…

(Note: I know this is somewhat tangential to Quakerism, but I haven't posted a thing here for several days.)
A local Marxist organization hosted a panel
discussion on Marxism vs. Anarchism. As someone with sympathies with both philosophies, I wanted to see if I would learn anything new by listening to what each side had to say. The panelists were all younger folks than myself, so I thought…

Eileen Flanagan: Leadings and confronting our own failings
Recently, however, there has been an uncomfortable sense that God is calling us to make and advocate for changes more difficult and radical than adding solar panels or a green roof.... The willingness to confront both our own failings and the ways of the prevailing culture are among the qualities that have enabled Quakers to influence history…

What is a nice little Quaker organization like us doing with online learning? Well, someone asked us to start it up. And someone came to us with an idea for a course. And we tried it. And we
liked it!
Quaker Studies is a small adult religious education program in the area around Boston Massachusetts. It's a joint effort of Beacon Hill Friends House in Boston and the local quarterly meeting, Salem Quarter. We've been doing local courses and workshops since 1993. Now we're…

I want to share my reflections on the comments to my original post on Unity. I think Friend Raye nailed it. The key to Unity with God is Holiness. If we all concentrate on becoming Holy as our Father in Heaven is Holy we will draw closer to Him and each other. We have to resist the strong temptation to get sidetracked by religious beliefs, dogma, theology or whatever you want to call our convictions about God. Our job is to love our neighbor and our God. If I do that and you do that, we will…

(My intent here is to do a series of blogs on human suffering, each highlighting a specific sort of suffering. This may sound morbid and dreary, but I find that recognizing human suffering forms a core part of my sense of calling in the world.)
