Faithfully Inclusive

Friends,

I have watched some folks I have come to appreciate as companions for my journey, leave QuakerQuaker. I have thought myself about whether to continue to be involved. The reasons why some have left have to do with a sense that QQ is unwelcoming to non-Christian Quakers. I feel that they are partly right, however, I intend to stay and to try and remain respectful of the site's intent.

Most of you know that I am an ex-Christian nontheist Quaker. I came to Quakerism… Continue

Begging God for a Fix: Gay to Straight?

Recently Christine Bakke and I received an e-mail from a 20 year old woman who visited Beyond Ex-Gay. She lives in a large city in the North East of the US. I spent time this morning with her questions and concerns, then I wrote a response. I imagine this woman represents the concerns and questions of many young Christians and people of faith. Below is her initial message.

I am a 20…

Is There No Light To Be Found?

Recently, some of us have been discussing nontheism and Quakerism in a forum at QuakerQuaker. My latest posting touched something deeply personal for me, and I thought I'd share that as a blog post.

Daniel wrote: "Where I am confused is when you state you are a non-theist. From this I understand you to mean a non-God person. Why do you seek if you've already decided there is no One, no Light to be… Continue

The Making of "The Tree of Life"

The Making of "The Tree of Life"

By Pacho Lane

From Quaker Theology, Vol 4 #2, Issue #7 - pp. 122-143http://www.quest.org

This is a story about learning to put Quaker faith into practice in a way George Fox never anticipated, while making a film about a Mexican Indian religious ritual.

I'm a "birth-right" Friend. My father, Ralph Lane, was convinced while in college at the University of Illinois. I was too young to remember attending 57th St. Meeting… Continue

Quakerism & Media

By Pacho Lane

The Society of Friends (Quakers) may be said to have started, in seventeenth-century England, with the event George Fox, the primary founder of Quakerism, describes in his journal:

"And when all my hopes in... men were gone, so that I had nothing outwardly to help me... then, oh then, I heard a voice which said, 'There is one, even Christ Jesus, that can speak to thy condition', and when I heard it my heart did leap for… Continue

Gender Variance and Amputated Hairdryers

Originally posted on my blog.

Diana, an openly transgender woman (a male to female trans activist) on her blog considers the question:

What does gender variance mean?

That question was asked on a forum that I read and of course, I took it literally. I answered in part… “To…

Transgender Bible Characters--The Power of Narrative

(originally posted on my blog)

I've been listening to a great podcast--Mandrake Society Radio and in particular to an interview with Steven G. Fullwood, founder of the Black Gay/Lesbian Archive, located in the Schomberg Center for Black Culture in… Continue

Did you know about the other "flibbetycues"?

I think it's Peterson Toscano who says that he likes to call the "FLGBTQC" the flibbetycues (or something like that) because the actual acronym is so awkward. He was talking, of course, about the "Friends for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer Concerns".

How many people know that "FLGBTQC" could also be the acronym of another group, one that might have a surprising amount of overlap with the one that Peterson refers to. What group is that? "Fun Loving Gregarious Bible Toting… Continue

The Jewels of Quakerism Project: All Weekly Surveys, Responses, and Videos

The Jewels of Quakerism Project is a four-fold endeavor undertaken by Callid and Kristina Keefe-Perry.

First. the Jewels of Quakerism is the name of a course taught for six weeks during the Summer of 2009 at the Pendle Hill Quaker Retreat Center in Wallingford, PA. That class will focus on another "Jewel" each week, showcasing the Keefe-Perry's understanding of what makes Quakerism particular and powerful. The Pendle Hill description of their class can… Continue

Young Friends gather at NEYM 09

Today we saw the official start of the 349th annual gathering of the New England Quakers (NEYM) with the theme Living Into Jubilee. As part of on-going worshipful discussions the organizers have encouraged all participants to consider the Biblical practice of Jubilee, letting fields go fallow for a… Continue

Quaker Superheros

I was looking at what came up on an image search for "quakers" and this came up. Someone has grouped comic book characters by religion. Quakers get lumped with Radical Pacifists so it is funny that Nixon is in there. According to Wikipedia the Moon characters were villains who were described as "radical pacifist terrorists” apparently they went around destroying military equipment in "a misguided effort to end all… Continue

How the Quaker Teens Blew Up My Heart: NEYM Day 1

(originally posted on my blog July 31st, 2009)

I have decided to write daily about this year's NEYM to share some thoughts, observations, "found poems," and news. I hope that both Quakers and non-Quakers will appreciate these updates.

I first attended this gathering of about 700 Quakers from all over New England in August 2002. I had only just begun attending Quaker Meeting in the fall of 2001 soon… Continue

The Christian Thing, Part Deux

I want to provide some context that may shed light on what I intended to say, but apparently failed to communicate to some.

In 2007, I became involved with the Christian and Interfaith Relations Committee of FGC. We are the caretakers of FGC's relationships to other religious bodies. One of the key relationships we have is with the World Council of Churches, an association of many of the largest Protestant and Orthodox Christian denominations. During a work meeting on an ecumenical… Continue

More about my recent dream of NYYM

At the risk of over-analyzing it, I have written some more about my recent dream and the responses of Friends who read my original post about it. See my new post here.

The Christian Thing (or Long Live the Christian Left!)

Though I am an ex-Christian nontheist Quaker, I am committed to accepting and promoting the Christian norms of liberal Quakerism. Some Quakers see a renewal of the Christian character of Quakerism as a survival necessity. Christians are the majority in our culture and if liberal Quakers are going to grow, they reason, the largest pool of potential new Quakers are Christians.

My own take on this is that in our majority Christian culture, there is an immense need for progressive… Continue

Toby Jacobrown files suit against the Selective Service System

My cousin has just filed suit against the selective service system and it was written up in the Washington Post today. He does a good job of presenting his case in a video post on the site so I will let him do the talking. I hope that we in the online Quaker community can think of ways that we can make this issue more publicly recognized through Toby's action. Do you agree with how he's going about it? Not? Give him support or suggestion on his site below.

Dear friend,

Peacemaking & Trinitarian Communion

I should give credit to "Quaker Oats Live" blogger Cherice for inspiring me to write on this topic.

For the past two years I have been involved with the Christian and Interfaith Relations Committee (CIRC) of FGC. As I visited various program committees of FGC Central Committee, I found that the sorts of business and discussions being carried out by CIRC excited and nourished me deeply.

(To disclose my personal biases, I will mention that I was born a Pentecostal, converted… Continue

come along! 5-6 pm, 16th of July, Trafalgar Square, or look on the 'One and Other' site.

POEM for those left standing...

'I am a person stuck with unrequested labels, Northern, female

Short-sighted, red-haired, maladroit

I worked for others, as a student, parent, activist, poet

Some labels I aspired to: Quaker, world traveller, true artist, cook

And others came from cruel authority,

Dispensed regardless…’too disabled’... to be me

That closed some minor official’s little book

Upon my whole life’s purpose…

But I live for human rights… Continue
