Poem for those left standing

POEM for those left standing...

'I am a person stuck with unrequested labels, Northern, female

Short-sighted, red-haired, maladroit

I worked for others, as a student, parent, activist, poet

Some labels I aspired to: Quaker, world traveller, true artist, cook

And others came from cruel authority,

Dispensed regardless…’too disabled’... to be me

That closed some minor official’s little book

Upon my whole life’s purpose…

But I live for human rights… Continue

Link to NY Times Article on Pope Benedict's New Encyclical

The Encyclical is entitled "Caritas et Veritate" which the Times translates as "Charity in Truth". I would have thought it meant "Love and Truth". Anyway, it has to do with economic justice. Seems like a good thing.

The Root of the Conflict

Christianity as a belief system is strongly focused on believing as a matter of... loyalty, "keeping the faith" so to speak.

This sets up a discordant situation between believers and disbelievers; it's probably a mistake to locate any resulting 'hostility' within one group or another.

They represent threats to one another's world-views, and serious threats at that. The disbeliever can muster the contemporary prestige of scientism, the history of centuries of… Continue

Sink to the Seed

When I would hear the old Quaker phrase, "sink to the seed," I used to imagine a roomful of old-timey, plain Friends in a wooden meeting house, sitting quietly, and practicing "sinking down." They become quieter and quieter until there is not a sound except for what floats in through the open window on a lush, sunny, early summer day: buzzing of honeybees, snuffle of waiting horse, singing of robin. What an idyllic scene, based almost entirely on what I imagined the outward experience of… Continue

Progressive Quakerism: A Religious Naturalist Perspective

"It has been our cherished purpose to restore the union between religion and life, and to place works of goodness and mercy far above theological speculations and scholastic subtleties of doctrine." Exposition of Sentiments Adopted by the Pennsylvania Yearly Meeting of Progressive Friends, 1853.

In the 1850s, some Quakers began to dramatically shift their religious orientation from a heavenly to an earthly perspective. The Progressive Friends movement was made up of both… Continue

What's Your Story?

I remember once being bothered by some guy's remark that he was taking the Bible "as story"--which I thought threatened to evade an absolutely crucial issue: "Is this story the truth?--or merely a fiction I happen to like?"

And now I'm slogging through NT Wright's The New Testament and the People of God. And one consideration I find compelling there is that we live in 'stories'--mental/emotional structures of intentions and outcomes--so that we make contact with physical… Continue

Update on Seton Hill Friends Worship Group

Hi Friends

Well our small worship group that started over a year ago as a monthly fellowship is now twice-monthly and we're looking at moving to an old meeting house that is currently operated by a community organization. If that happens, our name will change. We are hoping to also find a meeting to take us under their care. It's very exciting. www.setonhillfriends.org

Where are the real Quakers?

I recall my first clearness committee for membership twenty-three years ago. Six months earlier, I had attended my first Quaker meeting, "Unprogrammed," and that was a parenthetical part of the title on the nondescript sign in front of the meeting house. Having read various writings by George Fox, Howard Brinton, John Punshon, Elton Trueblood, and Robert Barclay's Apology in addition to many early Pendle Hill Pamphlets, I embraced the basic theology that existed among early Friends.…

The Jewels of Quakerism Weekly Survey

Friends,

This summer, Kristina and I are teaching a course in Quakerism at Pendle Hill. The majority of those in attendance will be young adults that are part of the Young Adult Leadership Development Program (YALD), plus some other students and staff people. Along with the usual exploration of various aspects of our faith and practice as a Religious Society - we have an emphasis on discovering together how we talk about our experiences. We'll turn, of course, to Early Friends for… Continue

We are that we are

I've posted on my blog a short piece that should be of interest to the Quaker Quaker community. It's about an exercise that a diverse group of friends did at a workshop conducted by Marge Abbot, of our Multnomah Monthly Meeting and Peggy Parsons of Freedom Friends. You can read it at theredelectric.blogspot.com.

My little essay begins with God's describing himself to Moses thus: "I am that I am."

The saints got it wrong.

After some time being annoyed by people who like to quote statements that "God has no hands but ours," I am pleased to announce that this has finally come out right in my head...

We have no hands but God's.

There are any number of things I would really, really like to accomplish. These are invariably things that I lack the skills, smarts, wisdom and omnipotence to actually do.

Okay, I've got these nice tactily-pleasant things that come in handy for good stuff… Continue

Keeping It Grounded?

I was just reading a brief, possibly unfair account of a charismatic Anglican clergyman of the 1840's. 'Men were quaking; women were fainting' during his sermons. His bishop clamped down, and soon this man had gone off to start a church of his own, where his ceremonial public attempt to render a female disciple immortal unexpectedly (to him!) rendered her pregnant.

Okay... So we need more 'enthusiasm,' in the root sense of God being more manifestly 'in us'--but 'enthusiasm' in the… Continue

When Traveling with an Extra Bonnet It is Wisest to Wear It

It has twice happened that I was traveling some distance on public transport and found myself in possession of two bonnets. I wear one bonnet every day, but to be in possession of two and to be traveling about is more rare. Now, I once traveled with a Friend in the same predicament and she accomplished it with no problem, so I will not say it is something anyone else would have to worry about. But I, I am inattentive to bonnets that are not on my head and I have allowed them to suffer squishing… Continue

The Lamb of Babel

There are a whole lot of Friends who don't think the Bible matters much, one way or another. There are a great many who consider it vitally important, but figure it has a simple meaning which they accept and others reject. And by the American Assumption, anyone who doesn't know must be sure that the truth lies somewhere "in the middle"? My position is: None of the above.

I've been laboriously neglecting this Bible blog I blundered into (kwakerskripturestudy.blogspot.com) and ended up… Continue

What to do while waiting patiently

Patience is a forced virtue. My hypotheses is that you learn it and practice it involuntarily. My personal circumstances over the past two years have put me in a situation where God has forced my hand: I have no control over the timing or outcome of things, only the control over how I respond to the events He has placed in my life.

A personal note: Nearly two years ago, I accepted a role in my company that requires I live/work in the Northwest, and since then, I've been commuting… Continue
