Primitive Christianity Revived, Again
Instead of not seeing the forest for the trees, I have recently come to realize, that the we are in danger of not seeing the trees for the forest. Concerns for the state of the Religous Socienty of Friends overshadows concern for the individual souls of its members and of those who enter its doors. Discussions over what is a Quaker miss the point entirely. When Jesus told his listeners to love their neighbor he was asked who is my neighbor. He then told the parable of the good Samaritan. Jesus constantly pointed out, wheather it was a fig tree or a sown seed, that it was all about fruit. He berated the Pharisees as hypocrites and praised the widow for giving from her substance and not her discretionary income. He said "What does it profiteth a man if he gains the whole world but loses his eternal soul?" - I would paraphrase that and ask what does it profiteth the Quakers if they become the largest religious society in the world but their members don't bear fruit?. We should concentrate on being good ground so the seeds that are sown within us bear fruit, some sixty, some eighty and some a hundred fold. We should clear the weeds that choke love, we should till the soil of hardened hearts and remove the obstacles that block roots from fastening onto our hearts from which the springs of life flow.
