Time for a "Station I.D." - When speaking of personal experience

Personal experience is, really, all I have.

While speaking of my own experience, I sometimes begin an observation with a blanket statement that is more than just imprecise.  Depending upon the medium and the audience, it could be unhelpful.  I pray that I remain mindful that my words be seasoned with salt, that they be spoken clearly, and be acceptable in the sight of the Lord.

Mom used to call it painting with too wide a brush (and slopping paint all over…

Surprise teaching

Earlier today, I was discussing a decision I had made with someone who did not appreciate it. 'nuff said.

In any case, this dear friend said, during the conversation, "Jesus was not a quitter."

And my response was, "No, He was not. He also did not do many things others wanted Him to, because he was very clear about what His purpose was."

Later, I was tempted to go through a shoulda coulda woulda with myself, about my…

Sharing the Response to Prayer

1 Corinthians 6:9 is a hot topic these days. It seems that it is time for me to share some of the results of my prayers about it, since like it or not, the debates and arguments and rhetoric have begun to frequently touch my daily life, and it seems to be time to open up a bit about what I have been receiving in prayer.…

Something good about simple, physical labor (a.k.a. drudge work)

Nothing earth-shattering, here.

This morning, this sun-bright, half-foot-of-snow covered morning, I was blessed. Again.

I had machine-washed a load of towels and wanted to hang them out to dry. It looked like a perfect morning to do so, the sky so blue, a gentle breeze, and predictions that it would warm up to freezing. Ahh, relative warmth!

I gathered the damp towels into the basket, stepped outside, and noted that I…

Response to some explanations about Quakers, speaking during worship, and leadership

On another site, a Friend has posted a thoughtful and seemingly thorough response to an inquiry from someone asking about orthodoxy, the Bible, and leadership among Quakers especially as it relates to worship and spoken ministry.

I wanted to gently point out that what has been written applies to a segment of the unprogrammed Quaker world (in which waiting, or silent worship is practiced), but not to all of it.

As it turns out, I was unable to successfully post a comment at… Continue

I Lovingly, Respectfully Decline the Invitation

Galatians Chapter 5 (The Message)

16-18My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God's Spirit. Then you won't feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day. Why don't you choose to be… Continue

Prayer for a gathering

Friends,

A number of us plan to attend the Powell House weekend the end of this (Eighth) month. I ask your prayers that the Lord's will be done among us and through us.

As far as I can tell, we will be a group with quite diverse backgrounds meeting together for the first time. Since we are coming together for worship, and the purpose of the gathering, based on the title of the weekend is "Following Jesus Christ Within Community," there is much to look forward… Continue
