QuakerQuaker This Week, 3/18/2012

One of our favorite posts from the Quaker web this week is Jeffrey Hipp's Why I became a Quaker--or why, as a college student, I came back af.... (turns out someone reached out to the new visitor and helped him get involved in the meeting). There are two stories on the unexpected path to chaplaincy by unprogrammed Friends: Joyce Ketterer writes in New York YM's Spark about her attempts to minister to the military and Eleanor Jo (Joey) Rodger talks about her work as a police chaplain in Friends Journal.

More of This Week's Editors Picks:

  • [This week is the 100th anniversary of Rustin's birth]. The high point of the confrontations came in North Carolina, where they were all sentenced to thirty days on a chain gang for violating state segregation laws. They chose to serve the sentences rather than post bail pending appeal. Rustin decided it would be a good chance to try a little exercise. He picked out the man who seemed the toughest and most hostile among the guards and "tried what love might do." …
  • "He describes how George Fox’s ‘early disciples went as far as pasting up posters on the doors of churches advising people not to try to find God there, but to go home and make the discovery deep inside.’ "
  • W hile Jesus was parading through these people praising his coming kingdom, they were proclaiming something that was not true about him. Their perceptions of who he was were wrong. He knew what they were proclaiming, and he did not correct them.
  • When installed and configured it will display a quote from George Fox (for each day of the year) on your phone.
