John Wilbur's Journal and Source Materials

Hello Everyone ... I'm deep in my journal with John Wilbur. This is my eighth reading in five years. On this reading I am trying my best to secure and read the various documents mentioned in the Journal; especially those of Gurney. Two pieces by J. J. Gurney I was am hard pressed to locate:

"Strictures on Truth Vindicated (STV)" and "Misinterpretations of Scripture (MOS) "

Happily, I did come across a reprint in the "The Inquirer" in 1838 of the latter piece. However I've not succeeded in finding the former. MOS is mentioned often by those who labored against Gurney. It has proved an important source document to test Wilbur's criticisms of Gurney's message. I hope to secure STV also. It is not mentioned as often, however, it seems a focal document for those who labored against him. As far as I can tell, these documents were written early in Gurney's labor against the "mysticism" of the early Quakers. I've read most of his later works and find them sterilized, not as edgy. It seems, Gurney concluded early on that, if he were to have influence, he needed to temper and disguise his true meaning. Those who labored against him often write about their frustration over the "shadowy" and "deceptive" nature of his ministry.

It is doubly compelling to read this reprint in The Inquirer because of that periodic editorial notes that are added.

Finally, If anyone knows how I may get a copy of STV, electronic or otherwise, I sure would be grateful.

I have some of his writing here and find it hard to read. I really want to understand it - as a member of OYM it seems important to understand him and the whole controversy and split etc. I'm also curious about your reading it so many times. Do you find it inspiring? Or is it for historical purposes? Barb

This Journal is a deep source of inspiration. In the reading, strength is given to "deepen down, and feel for the foundation."
