I know it seems like ages since I posted anything here, but it was a long and interesting summer that really didn't allow for the time required to tend to a blog. And as I start up again, it occurs…Continue

Bible Study for Friends

I have been fascinated by the Bible ever since my grandfather bought me my first one when I was 16 years old. I was a church attender at that time - the Episcopal Church - the only one in my rather…Continue

About Me
I am a semi-retired teacher and also a writer. I consider myself both a Catholic and a Quaker and have started a blog called Catholic-Quaker, on which I share my meditations on Scripture and other religious writings. I have written a book called Leadings: A Catholic's Journey Through Quakerism, in which I tell the story of my religious journey. I have recently been re-energized in my desire to bridge the divide that exists between Catholics and Quakers by the interest of a Friend from Iowa who says he shares my vision. I am hoping the dialogue that might come from engaging online will be helpful to me and to others.

New Testament Inspired: Beautiful Quaker Words: James Nayler’s Deathbed Testimony

There is a spirit which I feel that delights to do no evil, nor to revenge any wrong, but delights to endure all things, in hope to enjoy its own in the end. Its hope is to outlive all wrath and contention, and to weary out all exaltation and cruelty, or whatever is of a nature contrary to itself. It sees to the end of all temptations. As it bears no evil in itself, so it conceives none in…

Irene - I just finished reading your book A Catholic's Journey Through Quakerism. I myself - a longtime Quaker - joined the Catholic Church this Easter! I could have written many parts of your book - not so much the personal part but the openings that led me to join the Church and what I love about the Church and my feelings about being "out" of the Quaker environment etc. etc. I really would love to talk to you on the phone if that is possible sometime! I am struggling a bit with how to maintain my Quaker "self" and also how to bring that to the Church when there seem to be no opportunities to participate on a local level aside from attending Mass (I also sing in the very small choir).

I am an affiliate member of Ohio Yearly Meeting and have kept that status, but I don't think they are totally happy with me anymore - lots of shock and confusion about what I did maybe. Almost like telling them I am gay I feel. Sigh! It all makes so much sense to me but I feel very isolated. Even my Quaker husband is baffled and really does not understand. This is the first time we have not been together on a Sunday.

It occurred to me that maybe there are other former Quaker Catholics who could network a bit?

Thanks and hope to hear from you,

Barb Smith
