Primitive Christianity Revived, Again
There is a difference between prayer and being in God’s presence. While the fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much, healing takes place in his presence. Many of the people healed by Jesus had prayed for healing before they came into His presence where healing took place. There are exceptions to every thing but when it comes to healing, being in His presence is the best place to start.
There are many ways to come into God’s presence. Taking time out to sit quietly with the Bible is a good starting point. Often while reading the Bible a passage will speak to you and quietly contemplating that passage often leads to a sense of His presence. A benefit of Quaker un-programmed meetings is the hour of quiet worship locked into your weekly schedule, Singing songs of Praise and Worship either alone or in community is another way to enter into His presence but the important thing here is to focus on His presence and not get distracted by another song or what others are doing. Of course God being God, He can walk into your life at any time, in any way. You can be in the midst of a busy day or activity and suddenly realize He is there with you. To be clear I am not talking about visitations from Angels, I am talking about being in the presence of God Himself.
Some believe there is that of God in everyone, others believe that they are filled with the Holy Ghost and thus they are always in His presence. I would suggest that the presence of God is more than having the Holy Ghost, it is connecting that of God within to our Heavenly Father on His throne. That is why Jesus would go off to a quiet place to pray and why Jesus prayed in John 17 that we would be one with Him and the Father as He and the Father are one
.
Think of being one with God as being part of an electrical circuit. An electrical circuit is made up of several connected parts, but it is one. A useful electrical circuit would have a power source, an object that performed work that used that power source, and a connection between the two. It’s interesting that in Acts 1:8, Jesus instructed His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they received power. Being in God’s presence is a time of receiving His power. Power to heal, to preach and to love. We can store up the power received from being in His presence, and distribute it to those we touch, as mini-power sources. However, eventually, we need to be recharged by His presence. The more time we spend out of His presence, the more drained we become and the more drained we become the harder it is to be restored to that light on a hill that Jesus calls us to be, bringing healing not just to ourselves but to others as well.
I sat with the Creator/Boss of the universe; and all I got was a pleasant, peaceful time.
My latest inspiration Roberta Bondi considers that a perfectly adequate form for prayer to take (among all the many other ways that might be appropriate for any particular person at any particular time.) She also said that this could (sometimes) be a better approach than striving to 'achieve' any ulterior outcome (which could, of course, constitute an obstacle to the sort of connection we need most.)
I've found (so far) that giving myself permission to consciously 'be with' God in whatever condition I might be in, occupied with whatever else I might be occupied with -- was in fact a pretty good way to just deal with that and get on with things. Like the 'come as you are, but come' advice in many Faith&Practices.
Another way to come into His presence is taking the time to enjoy nature's beauty. A major benefit of what some would consider a bad day fishing or hunting is the time spent immersed in His creation. Golf would also work if it wasn't for all the mumbling after every poor shot and hiking has to be near the top of the list of places to meet with Him. Although that might be what got Moses involved in that whole exodus venture.
