First, assume that Quakerism is a "do-it-yourself" religion/movement. Next, assume that Quakerism is eclectic(universal/catholic is another animal entirely) regarding beliefs and practices. Thirdly, assume that you only have to follow that which you are personally comfortable and/or committed. And lastly, tether yourself to a post - for being docile or obstinate.

By the transforming power of inward Presence, the tether is cut, the post is split, and I ride atop the donkey into the city of Eternity. I am the Principle and the Principle is me. In me there is no outward characterization. I am the Life itself, free of the outward tether and post. For I am neither the tether, the post, nor the donkey.

Nasrudin's neighbor wanted to borrow Nasrudin's donkey. But, Nasrudin explained: "I've loaned him to my cousin a day's walk away; and there's no way I could get him back in time."

Just then, the donkey brayed in the back yard. "What's that?" the neighbor asked.

"Who are you going to believe, me or a donkey?"

Hello, Clem!

What you describe sounds like a religion that has the Ego as its god.  What could be more disastrous???

Any religion that has anything other than God as its god... is disastrous eventually.

The forms our religions take can be quite inadequate, but still serve to introduce people to God, who can make Godself better known in God's time, that is: as people ripen.

The Lord has need of a donkey,
the child of a donkey.

Forest. Tell us who or what is your God. Are you able to explain yourself? Where is your God? Can you place your God?

Comment by Keith Saylor on 9th mo. 8, 2014 at 10:14pm

William. The ego is the ground upon which the Christ acts. The transformed ego through the power of inward Light is the Kingdom of Heaven manifest. I and the Father are one. It is time this truth which the early Quaker manifested, and many later Quakers renounced, is shouted from the rooftops. Seek God in any outward form; whether ideological, metaphysical, communal, or institutional and you create an idol, which is the stuff of the uninspired bifurcated ego ... The natural man.

I am within you and all around you.

What I have written about God is available for anyone to read, in many places. If my writings help anyone find the God there is, good.

If these are not to your taste, God is still available, hardly "my" God or yours. We rather, are some of God's many people. As the Nasrudin story implies, God can place Godself quite well enough; and I'm hardly the one to badger as to "where"...

That is to say (if I have not made it sufficiently clear) that there is no point demanding that I explain myself, because it is not I that you need to reach an understanding with.

I do think that this poem might be particularly helpful:

[but perhaps I read too much into your manner?]

I thank you, Forrest, as James Nayler would, I imagine.
