In Matthew 7:7 Jesus tells us to ask and it shall be given to us, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you. I want to address this verse and especially the word "seek". It has been my observation that most people don't seek the truth. They might ask someone they know what is the truth but they don't ask God. And when they do, they don't seek the truth. It is my position that like the Israelites in Exodus we are willing to send Moses up the mountain to find out what God wants of us but we don't want to go up the mountain ourselves.
Let me explain what I mean by "seek". Imagine you are cooking dinner or working on your car and you need something from the garage. You ask your 17 year old to get it for you. You know exactly where it is. You tell him or her that it's in the garage on the right as you walk in the side door, in the brown cabinet on the second shelf. He or she comes back two minutes later and announces that it's not there. Exasperated, you stop what you are doing, bring the child with you to the garage and find it exactly where you told them it would be. They say "Oh, I didn't see it".
That child looked for the item. They didn't seek it. (Notice I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they actually went to the garage at all. :) ).
Now later that night you and the spouse are going out to visit friends. Before you leave you tell that same child if he or she wants to use the extra car you left the car key on the kitchen table. Now this time you made a mistake. You didn't leave it on the kitchen table. In fact it's not even in the kitchen. It's on the dresser in your bedroom. If that child wants to use the car, is there any doubt in your mind that he will find that key? I didn't think so. Why? Because he will seek it!
We need to seek the truth for ourselves. We can't be satisfied with someone else's truth, even if he's Moses or George Fox. We can not afford to be like Pontius Pilate and contemptuously ask "What is truth?".
In Hebrews 11:6, the Apostle Paul tells us that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. In Revelations 3:16 Jesus tells the church of the Laodiceans because thou are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. It's time to get on fire for God and to diligently seek him.
