Primitive Christianity Revived, Again
Yahweh is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
In grassy meadows he lets me lie. By tranquil streams he leads me
to restore my spirit. He guides me in paths of saving justice as befits his name.
Even were I to walk in a ravine as dark as death I should fear no danger, for you are at my side. Your staff and your crook are there to soothe me.
You prepare a table for me under the eyes of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup brims over.
Kindness and faithful love pursue me every day of my life. I make my home in the house of Yahweh for all time to come.
Is Psalm 23 written in the voice of a sheep dog? Is herd dog analogous to the role of a leader within a community of faith? Jesus is the true shepherd. Some people help on the sides.
ps: I have known all of these dogs, old men and shoes. Several of them quite well. jt
Thanks for this imaginative paraphrase! And for the photos of Border Collies, of which we had several during the time when we had a large flock of sheep. I am almost afraid
to try again here because of predators. In Virginia, we had an effective government-supported predator control program.
The text is from the New Jerusalem Bible. To copy and paste I usually go to www.catholic.org/bible.
I've been using this readable translation and its predecessor as a study Bible for decades. The notes are quite papist, but the translation is universal and readable.
We have no sheep, but like border collies. The tired red one was a rescue who lived with us for a decade. The one with the Holstein pattern in that hungry group came to us middle aged from our older son. They had an amazing bond, but he made a career change that precluded her coming to work with him. The black one liked mud and died of old age about a month ago. She and my wife were especially attached to each other. At the bottom is Tansy, our current dog, with classic coloring. She's about two and a half years old.
Border collies are only feasible as pets with lots of room and time to run. Willamette Park is near our home. Just returned from there. Tansy's second outing today.
