If you care about domestic violence, please go to e-petitions, 'domestic violence', and sign the petition.

Because...Domestic Violence has a severe impact on our national life. The NSPCC say that  at least 750,000 children witness it every year. One in three women attends Casualty because of it. There are 1,300 calls a day for help. The government needs to respond with far more more urgent and effective policies and support for the victims. Instead the government is cutting back on refuges, and support services. It is at times of economic downturn that the need for these services increases. Shamefully, the Olympics next year will see an upturn in domestic violence as disappointed fans take out their disappointment on their spouses and children.

It is estimated that one in ten men and one in five women will experience violence in the home. The human, emotional and financial consequences are considerable. We need to reflect national disgust over this violence.

A national monument to the victims would reflect our sense of outrage that domestic violence costs the lives of two people a week, and harms hundreds of thousands of innocent victims of  this home-based violence. Every day of the week there are news stories about jealous and insecure men and women who murder their partner and sometimes their children, too, often after years of abuse. There is no memorial for them anywhere in the world.
