Penn Army of None joins Philadelphia Yearly Meeting

On Saturday, November 6th, 2010, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting's Peace Committee welcomed us to the Yearly Meeting family as a Working Group. We are grateful for the guidance and support of the Friends community, which has included Minutes of support and financial assistance from Old Haverford Friends Monthly Meeting and the Haverford Quarterly Meeting.

Our current projects include expanding our counterrecruitment literature with new brochures focused on helping students in Philadelphia area schools find alternatives to military enlistment for college financing, job training, and community service. Visit us as pennpeace.ning.com and watch us grow!

Thank you, Penn Army of None. Something like this has been desperately needed
for a very long time. In the last few years, I know of several younger members
of New York Yearly Meeting, Baltimore Yearly Meeting, and Central Yearly
Meeting of Indiana who have served or are serving now in the military. In
some cases, I was told, they enlisted partly to gain college scholarships.
Yet there are much better ways to get college scholarships. One is the
civilian government program called Americorps. My daughter signed up
for Americorps more than 15 years ago. The scholarship that she re-
ceived after two years' service paid for two years at a community college,
plus many of her expenses. I know that in some states, at least, one is
allowed to join Americorps at age 18, in other words, right after high
school. In a few states, Americorps is partly militarized----but in such
a case one can always go to another state to join.
There is also Brethren Volunteer Service, which offers Americorps
scholarships as well, so long as one serves in the U.S.A. I don't
know why so few Friends use these programs; but if we tell
Friends about them, through our meetings and schools, I guess
many more Friends will use the programs, and stay out of the
military. So I thank you in advance for what you are doing.
