Because God's blessings are abundant, they are free for the asking. Because God's grace is sufficient, there is no charge; it is a gift and not earned income, yet invites reciprocal outflow. Because God's redemption is paid in full, repossessing is not an issue - yet, there's no interest paid by most brokers.

If our lives have been purchased by God, why are we always looking for credit and worried about our net worth?! Where sin abounds, the economy of grace playgrounds for the children of God's Economics.

Or, in a more secular, American-vein(with Quaker referents): "People who have property in a country which they may lose, and privileges which they may endanger, are generally disposed to be quiet(ists); and even to bear much, rather than hazard all. While the government is mild and just, while important civil and religious rights are secure, such(Friends)will be dutiful and obedient. The waves do not rise but when the wind(Spirit)blows."(Benjamin Franklin, 1760)

Some book Anne read referred to an alleged 'Desert Father's alleged saying that 'gluttony' was basically 'hypochondria.' That too could apply to appetites on many levels, what thinkest?

My diagnosis would have to be 'amblyopia', Forrest.

Um, 'lack of perspective due to one or more eyes being lame from disuse'? How so? Granted that some perspectives can lead to discomfort... that unconscious participation in a propaganda system can shut off some facts & ideas from view...

I still think we're dealing with a sort of addiction (a powerful force for concentrated attention towards the next fix & diverting attention from unpleasant questions like 'Where are we going and what am I doing in this handbasket?')

The conjecture I'm betting on is that it's all about a collective love-shortage that leaves people scrambling for any love-substitutes, any plausible counterfeits of well-being & security they can find -- with many people earning their own illusions of well-being by peddling such counterfeits.

This world is the lab where we need to practice giving/receiving/recognizing love; & many people have a very rough time finding all that.

Why things have needed to be this way?

I have come to believe that there is a question of debt as well - that I owe Love to the world. I am indebted more than I can imagine.  That, perhaps, one of the functions of Love is to give it freely and when I receive it (through Grace), I am obligated to repay that debt - somehow. Even to those whom I have never met.
