Advices and Queries for Isolated Friends (with a traditional understanding of Quakerism)

I have taken the liberty of adapting substantial portions of the Queries and Advices of Ohio Yearly Meeting’s Book of Discipline to create an Advices and Queries document for Isolated Friends (with a traditional understanding of Quakerism). I have contemplated OYM's Queries and Advices regularly as part of my own spiritual practice for a number of years. Over time, I felt that it would be good to…

Seeking Solace, Finding Peace

I speak to thee, seeker of solace, not from a separate or superior place, but as one who has walked in similar shoes along similar paths. I sought solace, begged for happiness, longed for the seemingly endless heartache to stop and the healing to begin. I found peace, not comfort and ease, but peace in the midst of discomfort and dis-ease. I found compassion for myself and for others, residing in my heart, the Christ Within had kept a small hearth-fire burning, waiting in the depths of my…

Book Review: The Concurrence and Unanimity of the People Called Quakers . . .

The Concurrence and Unanimity of The People Called Quakers As Evidenced By Some of Their Sermons is a collection of transcriptions of the preaching done by fourteen weighty Friends between 1688 and 1694. "That We Shall Be Made Able to Serve Him"

"This is the end of the testimony of the gospel of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, that we may all come to partake of His life, and that by partaking of it, we may live upon it, and being made alive to Him, we shall then be made able to serve Him." (From a sermon preached by Robert Barclay at Grace Church Street, Sixteenth of Fifth Month 1688. Source: The Concurrence and Unanimity of the People Called Quakers as Evidenced by Some of Their Sermons, first published by Andrew Sowle,… Continue

My Favorite Piece on Quaker Plain Dress, thank thee Caroline Stephen

by Caroline Stephen, from Quaker Strongholds, the Fourth Edition, printed 1907

"I believe that asceticism is in a very deep sense contrary to the real Quaker spirit, which desires in all things to abstain from any interference 'in the will of man' with Divine discipline and guidance, and which would, I believe, regard the idea of self-chosen exercises in mortification of the flesh with the same aversion as it entertains for pre-arranged forms of worship.…

When Traveling with an Extra Bonnet It is Wisest to Wear It

It has twice happened that I was traveling some distance on public transport and found myself in possession of two bonnets. I wear one bonnet every day, but to be in possession of two and to be traveling about is more rare. Now, I once traveled with a Friend in the same predicament and she accomplished it with no problem, so I will not say it is something anyone else would have to worry about. But I, I am inattentive to bonnets that are not on my head and I have allowed them to suffer squishing… Continue
