Brad Tricola: Postmodernism & Friends' Opportunities. On the last day part of the dialogue was, how are we as Friends especially equipped and prepared to minister within a post-modern culture. Leading Christian thinkers like Leonard Sweet, (and Todd Hunter) believe that Quakers, as antiquated as they may seem, are uniquely…

Robin M: Help Wanted 2010. Will all these institutions survive this once in a lifetime mass shift in leadership? How many will move in new and vibrant directions? Are there too many openings at one time? Are there enough younger Friends who are ready, willing and able to take on new responsibilities? To take on the hard work and hard choices? To commit? New wine needs new wineskins with every harvest. But…

I probably wrote something confusing, but maybe not all seen it. I found this place from a Google search of "quakers" and "spain". I'm interested in both. I intend to go to Spain to study Spanish. Wanted to know if there are Quakers and Quaker groups there. I probably should have included the word "and".
But aside from that, I'm interested in Quakerism inside and outside of Spain.
I may be attending the Southern California Quarterly Meeting.
Peace,
Kraig

Martin Kelley: "Tell them all this but do not expect them to listen". I’m more than three-quarters of the way through the Bible (I’m stretching my One Year Bible plan across two years) and that’s really all it is: story after story of human’s relations with God. Friends have picked up this methodology in a big way. Our primary religious education is the journals elders have…

Ashley W Shares her Visitor Report from NWYM. Thank you for the opportunity to visit NWYM on behalf of NPYM again. I enjoyed my time at NWYM annual session and I felt well used while I was there. I am glad that NPYM and NWYM have such a good relationship and I hope that the yearly meetings will continue to send visitors so that Friends in the Northwest can get to know each other better. Eileen Flanagan: Living in 'Right Relationship' with Creation. Because Quakerism is a decentralized faith, Quakers don't have a common doctrine or creed, though the belief that there is "that of God in everyone" undergirds many Quaker traditions, such as opposition to war and concern for the least powerful. In recent years, a number of Quaker writers and organizations have argued…

"Plain Dress November" on Facebook. Keeping with Friends' testimony of simplicity I thought it would be a neat idea if we take the month of november to reflect on our personal ideas about simplicity and plain dress.

Greg Woods: Meaningful Work and Long-Term Commitment to Change. As I am about to end two plus years of leading a service-learning program, I am reflecting on my time here and the lessons I have learned. A common phrase I hear a lot is “meaningful work”. Pastors, youth group leaders, and parents have all use this term when they call to inquire about my programs. Over time I have found out…

Micah Bales: Are We Ready for New Wineskins? I believe that if we focus most or all of our energy on resuscitating stagnant or dying institutions, we risk failing to re-contextualize the Gospel to emerging generations. Just as in Jesus' day, there are many of us who have the form of righteousness - who follow all the procedural rules to be "church people" - but who are not radically submitted to Christ. The…

David Johns: How do we attend to new growth? Recently a new Facebook group began gathering together folks with an interest in this very thing–”Quaker Church-Planters.” That’s an idea we don’t hear much about these days! After the burst of corporate-business patterned ‘church growth’ that blazed through in the 1980′s there hasn’t been much public discussion, among Quakers at least, about “planting”…

The 1961 Luis Buñuel film,
Viridiana, concerns the pious exploits of a young nun who lives in a small village. Meaning to do good in imitation of Jesus' ministry, Viridiana leaves the convent and decides to take charge of the moral education of the village's paupers. Despite her best intentions, she finds herself exploited, abused, and taken advantage of at every possible turn. Efforts undertaken to educate the village paupers in…

Robin Mohr: Let People Know You're a Quaker. What I think we need to do is to tell more people that Quakerism is wonderful and powerful. That God is speaking to them right now. That if they want, they can listen and do better. That they are created for more than shopping and eating and scraping for their boss. That they can live up to the Light that has been given to them.…

Roger Dreisbach-Williams: Basis & Structure of Friends. The Religious Society of Friends is the gathering of those who understand the reality of a living God and know that only in turning to one another can we be truly faithful. Only by releasing some to serve all can we become who we are meant to be.…

My proposal is that the Religious Society of Friends exists to enable its members to be more faithful to God. It exists because God is the Creator and We are Creatures, part of a broader Creation for which we are (in the image of God) stewards. Each of us has the overwhelming task of discerning our place in the creation and our responsibility as stewards.
It's understandable that the most common response to this reality is denial but Friends proclaim the good news that God loves us…

Martin Kelley - Spiritual self-understanding as pretext to organizational renewal. If you’ve got a group of people actively listening to the guidance of the Inward Christ then any process or structure probably can be made to work (though some will facilitate discernment better). Our books of “Faith and Practice” were never meant to be inerrant Bibles. At their…

Brent Bill asks: Why do we have Yearly Meetings or other institutions?. These questions seem vital to me -- especially if our larger institutions want to become or remain vital. The questions need to be asked regularly. They can't be answered once and for all time. If the organizations don't ask these questions -- and engage the people served by them in a discussion of the questions -- the…

R Scot Miller: Comfortable waiting interupted by Spirit. “What is it you want to pray for,” I am asked. I answer: “I want to be able to pray that the desire of YHWH is carried out by those who confess.” The next question is obvious. “Why don’t you pray for that desire to be met ?” I do not hesitate to respond. “It may mean that I might have to sacrifice in ways that I am not wanting to…
