What's Your Story?

Update on Seton Hill Friends Worship Group

Hi Friends

Well our small worship group that started over a year ago as a monthly fellowship is now twice-monthly and we're looking at moving to an old meeting house that is currently operated by a community organization. If that happens, our name will change. We are hoping to also find a meeting to take us under their care. It's very exciting. www.setonhillfriends.org

I recall my first clearness committee for membership twenty-three years ago. Six months earlier, I had attended my first Quaker meeting, "Unprogrammed," and that was a parenthetical part of the title on the nondescript sign in front of the meeting house. The Jewels of Quakerism Weekly Survey

We are that we are

I've posted on my blog a short piece that should be of interest to the Quaker Quaker community. It's about an exercise that a diverse group of friends did at a workshop conducted by Marge Abbot, of our Multnomah Monthly Meeting and Peggy Parsons of Freedom Friends. The saints got it wrong.

After some time being annoyed by people who like to quote statements that "God has no hands but ours," I am pleased to announce that this has finally come out right in my head...



We have no hands but God's.



There are any number of things I would really, really like to accomplish. These are invariably things that I lack the skills, smarts, wisdom and omnipotence to actually do.

Keeping It Grounded?

I was just reading a brief, possibly unfair account of a charismatic Anglican clergyman of the 1840's. 'Men were quaking; women were fainting' during his sermons. His bishop clamped down, and soon this man had gone off to start a church of his own, where his ceremonial public attempt to render a female disciple immortal unexpectedly (to him!) rendered her pregnant.

When Traveling with an Extra Bonnet It is Wisest to Wear It

It has twice happened that I was traveling some distance on public transport and found myself in possession of two bonnets. I wear one bonnet every day, but to be in possession of two and to be traveling about is more rare. Now, I once traveled with a Friend in the same predicament and she accomplished it with no problem, so I will not say it is something anyone else would have to worry about. But I, I am inattentive to bonnets that are not on my head and I have allowed them to suffer squishing… Continue

The Lamb of Babel

There are a whole lot of Friends who don't think the Bible matters much, one way or another. There are a great many who consider it vitally important, but figure it has a simple meaning which they accept and others reject. And by the American Assumption, anyone who doesn't know must be sure that the truth lies somewhere "in the middle"? My position is: None of the above.
