Interesting comments above: 'weirdest thing' and 'bizarre.' Then I thought back to my own first Quaker meeting at about 12 years old in Iowa as part of a Sunday school exploration of other religions. That's pretty much where my head was. Fifty-some years later I attended my second meeting and knew within minutes that spiritually I had come home after a long time in the wilderness. Opening to the Light, the power and grace of silent seeking, social engagement, and the respect for other people's relationship with God as they have found it all make being a Quaker the right place for me.
I attended an unprogramed meeting in Eau Claire, WI. I did not feel out of place and the quiet was really nice. This is one thing that attracted me to Quakerism. I have attended churches but they are so full of talk that I felt the voice of God totally missing. I enjoyed it and plan to return when the drive isn't so hazardous.
