Our Sacred Harp/Shape Note group sings 2 evenings a month in Tallahassee Fl-  with one of those singings at the Meetinghouse. This Monday night (4th Mondays), instead of singing in Meeting's glassed-in sunporch,  we will sing in the worship room for the first time in some years  The ancient musty carpet has been taken up- and that prompts our move! My faith is that our living God is everywhere present. As a human on this journey, my feeling of being, singing &  worshiping in this room has special spiritual aliveness and connectedness.  I have worshiped in this loving Friends community here for so many years.  I was married in this room.  Our singers recall the solace of singing "Sweet Peace,"  in this room right after 9/11. Some of us experienced the death of our mothers around the same time, and discovered that "She is Sleeping" was a gift to us.   So Monday, we will sing from the Sacred Harp-Denson Book as well as the Christian Harmony.  We are typically a very mirthful group and we welcome any new or visiting singers. We also sing from the Cooper SH edition on most Friday nights after the second Sunday.

I love Star in the East. Southern Harmony has a lot of really beautiful tunes - other favorites of mine are Consolation, #17, Condescension #312, Tender Care #331, and The Turtle Dove #43. I live near Green Bay, WI - if anyone is ever in this area, I'd love to sing with you.

I agree with you. They are songs first. I just haven't found the opportunity to join a shape note group.

I guess I qualify as a "folk musician" and agree that there are a lot of wonderful tunes in the Sacred Harp, Southern Harmony, and other shape-note books that are beautiful when played on dulcimer, banjo, etc. But nothing comes close to SINGING them, loud, with others.

I'm new to this group. I don't sing Sacred Harp, but love the music. I do play Sacred Harp and Southern Harmony tunes on my mountain dulcimer. I'm currently working on learning Star in the East - 16 Southern Harmony. Any other folk musicians in this group?

What's singing in my head these days: Last week: Swanton, 352 - The voice of my beloved sounds, over the rocks and rising grounds. Yesterday in Meeting: Holy Manna 59. And I'm having fun switching around words to tunes of the same meter. - Carol
