Don't bother rebuking mockers

Today's Proverbs reading was interesting:

Proverbs 9:7-8: Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get a smart retort. Anyone who rebukes the wicked will get hurt. So don't bother rebuking mockers; they will only hate you. But the wise, when rebuked, will love you all the more.

It's interesting to me because it's long been my internet strategy: don't get worked up about people who seriously disagree with you and won't listen. I always like it when old spiritual wisdom matches up with common sense wisdom.

I am not as impervious as you are, Martin, to being mocked or seriously challenged by someone who won't or can't listen. One of my mockers when I started down this Christian, Bible-reading path was my Jewish, agnostic husband. By showing some backbone and increased happiness at finding the right spiritual path for me, he has toned it down considerably. Actually it is most likely that my increased ability to enjoy and love life and other people is what demonstrated to him that my convincement is something he should support. This validates the Proverb's common sense wisdom, eh?

Hi Elizabeth: I'm not sure I'd call myself impervious. I can get quite bothered. But I've realized when I get bothered that means it's time to settle myself down. Because yes: the tone with which we lives our lives is the proof of the faith. Did you see Johan Maurer's piece yesterday about publishing the truth by living the truth. Good stuff!
