Thank you the link to these photos. Are you familiar with the area. I'm interested in whether the 17th photo is a Church or Meetinghouse?
Hello, Keith!
I regret that there aren't captions. I suspect that the red building with lots of windows is a church school.
Darlene and I made a long trip through central Pennsylvania after Debbie Ferbache's funeral at Barnesville. We traveled through "Big Valley," Kishacoquillas Valley. Then we worked our way over to I-81. I think we went through Snyder County; it was a rather arduous trip because we didn't stay overnight on Sunday, traveling on to northeastern New York where my family lives.
We had stayed overnight with friends in Barnesville, and probably went to meeting at Chestnut Ridge. The most spectacular thing we saw was at Belleville PA, where we met the Byler Amish on their way home after meeting and Sunday dinner at a home somewhere. Their buggies had BRIGHT, bright yellow tops. We were headed in the opposite direction, so we met them rather than following them. At first, there were no gestures, but soon we and they were waving at each other, possibly cued by our Anabaptist appearance. It was fun. See http://pabook.libraries.psu.edu/palitmap/AmishInBigValley.html The first picture of a carriage is a Byler buggy, but it doesn't do justice the brightness of the top.
By early Sunday morning, we had reached the Quaker Street exit on I-88. We decided to pull off and look up the Quaker Street meetinghouse. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaker_Street_Historic_District It was a good stop, although I got one shoe quite wet in a drainage ditch next to the cemetery. Unfortunately, the Quaker Street Meeting consists of a small, struggling group of elderly Friends trying to hang on. Sorry for the unjustifiably rambling answer to your question!
WIlliam. Thank you. Many, many, many, (did I say many) years ago I went through Snyder County on the bicycle trip. I think I remember towns like Kissimee, Paxtonville and Penns Creek. The photos brought back some very pleasant memories and powerful Chrisitian fellowship. I am from Michigan and sometimes gathered together with other Christian young people to do bike tours in various states, mostly in the midwest.
Thanks again for kick-starting some wonderful memories.

Actually. it was Monday morning when we got to Quaker Street. Later, I corresponded with the Clerk to learn more about the current condition of the Quaker Street meeting. There is an abandoned church down the road, now occupied by a Bible church. I suspect that their spiritual outreach is more vigorous.
