Event Description

William Dewsbury was one of the founders of Quakerism. His life embodies the Quaker search for truth, from a seeking youth, to dissent and Cromwell's army, to disillusion and the discovery of Christ as living teacher in his people. Dewsbury was in prison for the larger part of his time as a Friend, yet was an essential contributor to the health and growth of the movement. When schisms arose, he was one of the toughest of peace-makers, a powerful preacher and impassioned writer, whose works are little known these days. "Perhaps the sweetest and wisest of early Friends."
