QUAKERS AGAIN CARRY THE GOOD NEWS
OF THEIR FAITH AND PRACTICE
The Religious Society of Friends witness and worship at Independence Park, carrying and sharing a message for our time in the Spirit of Love and Truth.
Philadelphia, PA – A “Pop-up” Meeting for Worship will be held in People’s Plaza, inside Independence Park, on Saturday, November 23 from 9:30am to 3pm. All are welcome to join in this opportunity for outreach, community building, and public witness.
Hundreds of years ago when Quaker’s were persecuted for their faith, meetinghouses were condemned or destroyed. That didn’t stop Friends from living out their faith. Moving their worship outside, Quakers knew that God was present everywhere, and they weren’t afraid to take their faith to the streets or the public square. Today, many Friends today are hesitant to share their faith and practice with others, thinking their faith is one that does not proselytize. However, in a world where the “church” has seemed to cause more harm than good, many people are without spiritual community, and disillusioned with faith. Now we have an opportunity to carry the good news of Quakerism to a society that needs a spirituality of peace, community, integrity, and social justice more than ever.
During this extended period of waiting worship, there will be a banner that says “What is going on here?” There will be a pop-up canopy set up with greeters, Friends who are available to answer questions and provide information and literature. All spiritual seekers are invited to participate.
Bring your own seat, dress for the weather, prepare to enjoy a time of communion and connectedness with the Divine and one another. Friends will gather throughout the morning and afternoon for waiting worship, while others will provide education and literature on Quaker history, current resources, and answer questions about the Religious Society of Friends faith and practice.
If you (or your organization) would like to donate literature, and/or have representation at this public outreach event, please contact Hoot or call 484-483-5775. Please help spread the word by sharing this notice widely.
People’s Plaza is located on the eastern side of the block containing the Liberty Bell Pavilion and the President’s House site, and a block north of Independence Hall.
