Below are the notes from a message delivered by ESR student Martin Melville at Williamsburg Friends on Sunday, April 14, 2013:
Working in nature: awe and humbleness. These things are not of me. See the intricate glory of creation. Concepts of neatness, order, beauty. Human vs. divine order. “Faith is a venture into the unknown, into the realms of mystery, away from the safe and comfortable and secure.” - Parker Palmer,
In the Company of Strangers. What will we do next week to keep body with soul?
Risk. Danger. Living with risk/hazards OSHA: if this was a factory floor, there’d be citations left & right, but this is the woods. Business model: estimate the value of trees. Educated guess. You don’t know the actual value until the check comes back. Your best is all you can do. Uncertainty and change are the only things you can count on. You manage risk as best you can. Some things (either good or bad) blindside you. You learn to live on faith that you’ll come home at the end of the day and that the bills will be paid and there’ll be food on the table, a roof over your head.
Frailness. It takes only a short piece of a small stick to kill you. The fleeting nature of life, its fragility. We are here by His Grace. Live in the moment, be grateful for every one. Physical strength lift 150 lbs. Spiritual strength, move mountains.
