Primitive Christianity Revived, Again
Because I have dared to name the danger facing our society in general and Quakerism in particular, I offer a definition of same. "Solipsism" is the theory that the self can be aware of nothing but its own experiences and states.
For society, this translates as David Byrne's "Once In A Lifetime" with people mourning their own situations in light of unrealistic expectations. For Quakerism, founded upon honoring personal experience as a means of continued revelation, the deck is stacked even more for those who mourn the reality of religion in light of a hunger for ultimate meaning and purpose.
The Religious Society of Friends offers its members the ability to actively pursue our own leadings(personal agenda?) and, conversely, to simply sit in the silence(unchallenged?). In other words, a solipsistic paradigm(breeding ground?) of self-absorption in particular, even partisan, experiences and states of activism and passivism respectively.
That's the theory; but the reality is that Quakerism is not the "same as it always was" by letting the days go by and the water go over the damn predicament of solipsism. Dare I ask, in consequence, where are our publishers of truth waging valiant effort for Primitive Christianity today?
What?-ever?!(not always)
At worst we offer "the ability to activliy pursue our own leadings". At best, we offer a community working to discern God's leading for us.
The original publishers of the truth were not following personal agendas.
Being stuck in the concerns and viewpoint of the 'little-s' self -- a terrible affliction.
Knowing the Self that is the true Life inside us, as embodied in everything there is -- quite a different (and Rumier) way to be.
