Primitive Christianity Revived, Again
New Discussion Carnival: How Do We Care?
It's a new month, so time for a new "Discussion Carnival." Last week, Eileen Flanagan asked the QuakerQuaker Forum, What does "under the care of the meeting" mean to you? It's a good question. I can think of a few "emergent" Friends worship groups that have sought to be taken under the care of the nearest Friends meetings only to be rejected. Sometimes the problem simply seems to be that we can't understand what it means to be under the corporate care of a Friends body.
Care isn't just for new worship groups. When a member joins a Friends meeting or church, they are then under its care. So too is weddings. When a ministry is recognized or a concern acknowledged, they become the care of the meeting. These relationships come with certain mutual requirements. When I hear Friends frustration with their local meeting, it's often because they expect a deeper relationship with it. A lot of Friends seek both greater accountability and support from their community.
