Eileen Flanagan: Leadings and confronting our own failings
Recently, however, there has been an uncomfortable sense that God is calling us to make and advocate for changes more difficult and radical than adding solar panels or a green roof.... The willingness to confront both our own failings and the ways of the prevailing culture are among the qualities that have enabled Quakers to influence history out of proportion to our numbers.

Michael Birkel: Early Friends and Scripture
Early Quaker writings, filled as they are with Scripture, beckon us to read the Bible as early Friends did. How can we embrace their way of reading and make it our own? As I've tried to explore this way of reading, I have become persuaded that such reading was an exercise of attention, memory and openness to the presence of God.

Living Anj has a good time clerking a committee meeting
I felt led not to bring an elder, and as I held that in the Light, I decided to explore, with the committee, what it looks like to elder ourselves. And as I rode the train the weekend, reading Elizabeth's Boardman's Where do I Stand? and the notes from my clerking weekend with Arthur Larrabee, clarity came.

Liberata on the Bumbling Quaker and the Virtuoso
the first question Justin asked me was about the place of the Bible in Quaker faith. I wish one of those bad Quakers from the Bad Quaker Bible Blog had been there to answer that one in my place! ... How concrete, how rock-solid was all that he said...and how airy and undefined my explanations must have sounded! But how does one explain what it's like to sit in the silence and breathe in the Spirit and the unmistakable joy when the heart recognizes the voice of the Master and Teacher?

Quaking Harlot James: Standoffishness at Meeting
I had been coming to this meeting on and off for three years--and yet almost no one even recognized me. That there is the core group of people at any meeting, that they do it all, and complain about how hard it is to get more people involved. Yet, they can be so standoff-ish. That no one attempts to talk with others after meeting.

Ear of the Soul Mark: when worship and testimonies become idols
I have found myself wondering how much of Meeting for Worship has become an idol. Do we come to meeting because of the silence, or because of our encounter with God? Are we silent because we are giving control to God, or because "that is what we do in meeting"? Is it most important that a message is Spirit-led, or that it is not too long, doesn't use icky words, and comes from a speaker who doesn't speak every week?

Anna on Young Adult Friends and the New Monasticism
It's been a week since I moved into the house donated to the YAFIR (Young Adult Friends in Residence) program. The house was in bad shape when we got it but half a dozen F(f)riends have worked very hard for the last three weeks and it now feels more like a home
