Max Carter: Scripture written before homosexuality understood

Max Carter: Scripture written before homosexuality understood. In terms of homosexuality, I suspect that most scripture was written way before we had an understanding of the term - and the nature of human sexuality. Most clergy are products of their own culture and boxed sets of perceptions. Our personal experiences are limited. Our logic is often faulty and our reason influenced by our environment. But we can find commonality in the scriptural call to love mercy and seek justice; in a growing consensus of centered and selfless clergy that G-d's love is greater than our limited ability to share it; in an expanded experience of the homosexual as our neighbor rather than a stereotype; and in a wide body of scientific discoveries about the complexity of our sexual identities and what is "natural."

To imply that God has a lesser understanding of homosexuality than we do is ignorant at best. The pride of man for what he thinks he knows is foolishness to God (1 Cor. 3:19). What we do know is that we are all apparently born with various affections, some towards violence, some theft and others homosexuality or some other flaw. God wants us to overcome these wrong desires and replace them with right desires and to support each other in doing so as a loving neighbour. But when we climb over the inhibition which God has put in place and commit and act of sin we and society needs to be dissuaded by punishments just as God has prescribed in His ultimate wisdom. We can all make excuses for our crimes, but neither you nor I nor the courts are prepared to abandon justice entirely simply because we are all naturally affected by criminal desires. Yours is an argument of convenience, a principle that you yourself would never apply universally. In God's word, Homosexual inclination is not condemned and punished but the exercise or act of it is and always should be.

By the way, when I posted my comment an ad appeared at the top of this page "Meet Gay Men - Search over ten million members and meet singles near you. It's easy! www.Zoosk.com" Might want to look into that.

Hi Thomas: we have some Google Ads filling up empty slots as as we're building up the Quaker Ad Network. It looks like Zoosk is an all-purpose dating site; the topic of the post must have triggered this specific ad on Google. I've had straight friends meet through online dating and go on to have holy, committed marriages. We've got plenty of LGBT Friends and seekers; maybe some of them are single. Sometime in the next month or two I'll drop the Google Ads, which should make all the ads more relevant and Quaker focused. --Martin

I still don't understand Homosexuality. How is it different than gluttony, greed or plain old heterosexual lust? I do understand that Love covers a multitude of sins and as an aging but hopefully repentant sinner I am very happy that I do.
