John Edminster: The basic gospel message is love

John Edminster: The basic gospel message is love. But love is not primarily a feeling, but a decision of the will: I will not hurt you back if you hurt me. I will not cheat you, tell you lies, or manipulate you for my own advantage. I will lay down my life for you if that will save yours. That’s what the Gospel asks me to do, and I will do it, and I pray that God will give me the strength to do it, or do anything that I discern to be God’s will for me.

John, I think we have to go further than "Love is a decision". I think Love is the part of God that George Fox said was in every man. A godly spiritual "gene" that we can allow to be empowered by the Holy Spirit thus transforming a carnal creature into a godly spiritual being. I think Jesus shows us in the Gospels how to allow this empowerment to take place. Just reading the first thing Jesus did after being baptized by John in the Jordan and his encounter with Temptations is a basic primer on becoming His disciples and little christs. Reading about the last thing he did before his death on Calvary at Gethsemane when He accepted the Father's will, the Father's Cup, and his successful struggle to do so highlights the attitude we must strive for if that love that is God is to grow in us to the point where we are in Him and He in us.

"Who among you can intentionally add one inch to his stature?"

We have to go less far, in a much different direction-- recognizing that the power and love of God are available to sort things out for us-- and for whichever people we love, or don't.

It's not about our love. Though we're likely to feel more loving from knowing we are loved, that 'God loves you' means something quite real.
