I'm presenting the use case of NPYM considering what it would take to support mail-lists (regionally, not per MM, the status quo). You'll see my post quoted beneath the reply.
Wes (the responder) thinks that'd be too much overhead, the way I'm thinking of doing it (using a free open source Python mailman for the listserv back end, ala Python.org where I'm posting). He thinks we should just stick to Google.
