QuakerQuaker This Week, 6th Month 10, 2012

A Friend asks if we're risk averse, the AFSC urges us not to simply protect the status quo, Kenyan Friends respond to war, and a pacifist challenges a self-identified Friend with the highest soapbox in American media.

QQ Editor Picks, 6/10/2012

  • Our value as children of God does not depend on our spiritual maturity - grandparents do not have more intrinsic worth than the babies - but neither are they less valuable. So it is with spiritual maturity.
  • Conflict does not equal confrontation. In my experience, most Friends are not necessarily “conflict averse,” but are most definitely “confrontation averse.”
  • If we are only protecting the status quo, then the things you choose to do, you are choosing in order to maintain the status quo.
  • Simon, like many other liberal pundits and politicians, is able to dress up horrendous crimes and make them appear acceptable, and even good. Indeed, there is no doubt that without people like Scott Simon peddling their bad religion, the U.S. war machine could not keep churning without so much as a peep from the American people.
  • What was so different about Downingtown Friends? He wouldn’t say this, but I will. It was Fran Brown himself, and, of course, his wife, Enid... They enthusiastically greeted people in meeting as if welcoming them into their home. And maybe they wouldn’t get the name exactly right the next time, but they knew who you were, and would be just as gracious and friendly from then on.
  • Differing definitions of Quakerism create a significant challenge for inter-branch communication.
  • ...Far too many churches are content to do as I did--bask in the warm glow of righteous feelings instead of risking God's demand to live in love and truth and to have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness.
  • "She said, "Deciding on a denomination is about deciding where you want to struggle, because no religious home is ideal."
  • Many Friends say that they want deep worship, but we are not always good at saying what that means. For me, it is a corporate experience of the presence of the living God―a time of worship that is so drenched in the Spirit that everyone can feel it and we are all changed by the experience.
