Primitive Christianity Revived, Again
O God, do not keep silent;
be not quiet, O God, be not still.
See how your children have strayed,
how your detractors ever increase.
Avoiding you, we diminish your own family;
silencing your own beloveds.
“See,” we say, “how Christianity has destroyed nations,
let the name of Christ be remembered no more.”
In corporate discernment we’ve erred;
We witness while avoiding the Word –
The house of New England and New York,
Of Philadelphia and Baltimore,
Ohio, Illinois, and the North,
Alaska, with the people of Canada.
Even Britian has joined in,
lending aid to the descendants of Nihilism.
Pause, and pray on that.
Lead us as you did Fox,
as you did the Fells
and those gathered at Pendle Hill,
whos lives were patterns
and bore good fruit from the tree of Life.
Make our elders, like the Valiant Sixty,
and ministers, like Penn and Pennington,
say today, “Let us take possession
of the pasturelands of God.”
Make us seeds, O my God,
blow us with the breath of your Spirit.
As fire consumes the forest
or a flame sets the mountains ablaze,
So pursue us with your Love
and tender us in awe-filled silence.
May our faces radiate with Light
so that all will seek your names, O Truth.
May we never be ashamed or dismayed;
may we live in faith and grace.
Let us know that you, whose name is Mystery –
that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.
It seems a more plausible (and interesting) interpretation of our present situation-- That among those whom God has 'gathered' into our Meetings-- are precisely those 'detractors'. They don't yet realize that they have been gathered... and while they serve presently as obstacles, we won't know for some time what use God intends for them.
Admittedly this leaves me a bit starved for religious conversation; has been an intense source of disappointment-- but given that God is the ultimate power behind this world, I owe God at least the benefit of the doubt here!
