T. Edmund Harvey

I am working with Ben Pink Dandelion doing a PhD on  the English Quaker politician of the first half of the twentieth century, T. Edmund Harvey (1875-1955)

Thomas Edmund Harvey was born in Leeds of a prominent Quaker family in 1875.  A leading figure of his time, he was a politician and social reformer as well as an author of fiction and of religious, biographical, historical and spiritual works.  He was educated at Bootham’s School and Oxford; he is said to have been the first Quaker…

A New Foundation to Build On: Introduction to “The Power of the Gospel”

The Quaker’s revolution was a movement to recover the experience of the power of God through the recovery of that gospel of power which had been lost “since the Apostles’ days.” -- Lewis Benson…

Scam on Quakerquaker

  Dear Friends

I was contacted recently on Quakerquaker by someone calling themselves 'Elizabeth Waves' who was due to receive an inheritance of £2 million and wanted me to act as 'trustee'. It is obviously a scam, but I felt it was worth mentioning as it seems they are able to contact individual members directly. I'm not sure who administers the site but could anyone reading this please ensure that he/she is made aware of this.

Many thanks

Derek…

Portland-Shiraz Sister Cities Project

The Unitarians are more at the forefront than Friends on this initiative, however we had a number of Quakers at the Iran Forum where this proposal was floated, receiving much interest and applause. I'll give a link in the comments to my journal entry on our meeting.  Portland is already sister cities with a lot of others, like Chicago is, including Sapporo (Japan) and Ashkelon (Israel).

Given my connections to higher education, I'm especially keen to share Silicon Forest curriculum…

Rescuing Romans 13:1-7 – How do we answer authoritarian use of these words?

Originally published on the Quaker Universalist Fellowship blog (6/30/18)

Amid the wide global turmoil stirred by America’s current flexing of authoritarian nationalism, a deeper spiritual turmoil has been brought to light by the current administration’s use of the apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans.

There is a willful…

Immanent Communion and forbearance

ResearchNotes, Code:DisFirWis, Naylor, Creature, forebearance, condescension

The second man is spiritually begotten by the Spirit of the immortal seed, is the express image of the Father; he knows the Father and is known of him, not by relation of the creature but by the in dwelling of God in him, and he in him, according to that measure of the light revealed in him. (A Disovery of the First Wisdom from Beneath and the Second Wisdom from Above. By James Naylor,…

To be owned in the presence of God and the own the presence of God

The inshining presence of God and the birth of awareness and morality that is come out of outward political and religious conceptual and institutional forms and into immanent Presence itself in itself.

I am come into the presence of God and this presence is discovered and is discovering to me way of being wherein that inshining presence itself is sufficient in itself to anchor awareness and to guide and inform moral and ethical sense non-conceptually. Through the…

New essay at Abiding Quaker: The Lesson of the Fig Tree

The following paragraph is an excerpt from the essay that can be found at Abiding Quaker .

As with so many incidents that take place in Scripture, this story tells us something of ourselves, and in this story, we are being taught something about what is expected of us as…

Of Plain Speech & Post-nationalism

Stetson + C6XTY

I might bring this up informally with Oversight Committee, like I did with my "Gun Club" Stetson.  "Is this OK?"

By "this" I mean my tendency to refer to nations in the past tense, as a matter of plain…

Geroge Fox and those early Quakers who denied “prescriptions without distinction.”

Research Notes: George Fox, Researchcode: geofoxjournalpt2pg3331709ed

In 1678 George Fox was moved to write a paper against those Quakers who opposed the Godily established order and disciple in the Quaker gathering. Fox says these Quakers who opposed the divinely given order of the Quakers “deny Prescriptions without distinction.”

To deny Prescriptions without distinction is to not differentiate between those outward prescriptions that are divinely given and those…

Siding with Iran

As my long time blog readers know, I don't believe the Persians are hellbent on getting nuclear weapons.  On the contrary, the political rhetoric coming from these religious leaders as that holding such WMDs is highly immoral and unethical.

The US Christians don't usually say that.  Evangelicals tend to be pro atom bomb, as an expression of God's love for them.

Protestants are especially bomb crazed and explosive ordnance, along…

Excerpt from a Memo to SNEC (typos fixed, mentions Earlham)

[SNEC = Synergeticists of the Northeast Corridor ]

Because I went to a fancy school (Princeton) and studied philosophy, I'm used to such as Dr. Walter Kaufman suggesting that "university philosophy" was a subject with zero backbone, a spineless trajectory for dweebs.  That was a challenge to us of course, to make it be otherwise. We were the new generation. He told me directly in his office he thought I was best of breed, in terms of my writing.

Wittgenstein too begged his…

Plain Dressing in Mainland Europe

Hi all,

Even though I am new to this website ( if only I had know about this years ago!), I am not new to dressing plain and have been sewing my own plain clothes for the past 4 years. In the first two years I was really struggling to find good and affordable patterns, but they all had to come from America and cost quite a lot of money in postage and extra tax, so it took me a while to take the plunge into dressing plain, and then a awhile longer to feel comfortable in it ( being…

When indwelling Spirit establishes inherent human being or consciousness.

Research Notes: Code:jamnayadotfw1653, James Naylor, Inherent Being

In 1653 James Naylor wrote:

The inshining Spirit and the discovery of the Substance of all types, figures, and forms.

It happens that the Spirit of Christ makes visitation upon our consciousness and conscience and his Image is come and we can witness the second coming, the Daystar, within our consciousness. The formation of the inshining Image or Presence within initiates a shift in the very nature of consciousness and conscience. The witness and awareness of Christ’s inshining Presence manifests a way of being wherein consciousness and personal identity is established in the forming Image of Christ itself…

Memo re Syria

[memo to a listserv for faculty and Peace Corps vets, a couple typos fixed, I think I'll add this to Medium]

I was pleased to see the militaries colluding to put on a fun show for the vicious masses, eager for fireworks. TV voyeurs love a great spectacle. Many are whining they want more. They want to "rubbleize" Damascus. "Please please please give us more violence".

Choosing to attack supposed…

Theological Murmurings

One might think "mumbling" describes it better, as more incoherent than not, however "murmuring" sounds better.  Today is Easter, and April Fools.

I'm meditating on the foolishness of Man, quite appropriately. I'm going back to Genesis 2-3 when they apparently had the choice of a second tree's fruit, the fruit of Eternal Life.

Given a choice between Eternal Life and this other thing God said no about, and that had a snake on it, a talking one, Man chose this other thing. How…
