A Quaker view on Simple Living.

Posted on 11th mo. 17, 2014 at 9:32am 0 Comments

My grandfather Sidney Albert lived simply. He lived in a small house in the country, grew his own vegetables, kept a few chickens and all his food was cooked at home in the kitchen. His house had no electricity or gas; it was kept warm by a wood-burning stove and lit by oil lamps and candles. I was very young when he died, but I do remember him wearing a collarless shirt, black worsted trousers, braces (that’s suspenders in North America) and a waistcoat. He never ever went out without…

A Quaker view of Jubilee

The English physicist Isaac Newton had a bit of thing about the number seven; so convinced was he that it was the number God had chosen to order the universe, that he looked for it everywhere. He was convinced that the Sun had seven planets, that the rainbow was made up of seven colours and that the number seven was at the heart of all creation.

Unfortunately, any five year old will ask the question ‘Isn’t indigo just dark blue?’, and put a hole through his argument. Of course it is… Continue

Almeley Wootton and the Charter for Pennsylvania

Posted on 1st mo. 16, 2013 at 8:33am 0 Comments

Almeley Wootton Meeting is about nine miles from Hay-on -Wye and is one of the oldest, and most beautiful, Quaker Meetinghouses in Britain.

Richard Davies made the first reference to Almeley Meeting in their travels about 1669. Roger Pritchard gave the meeting house, an adaptation of earlier cottage buildings, to Friends in 1672. Since then it has been used almost continuously by Friends. Edward Pritchard, son of Roger, was one of the thirteen signatories…

How does one join the QuakerQuaker Vegetarian group?

I don't usually take over two years to accept a friend request.  I think it is only because I'm an infrequent visitor to QuakerQuaker; too busy with other things and often preoccupied by my (rather slow) development of the idea of trying to get people to converse more with others outside their immediate vicinity, nationality and peer groups.  I see this as an underlying step towards developing a fairer and more peaceful world that everyone should consider taking.  I think it as necessary to the building of a better world as a frame is to the building of an arch.  But I'm getting carried away again ....  Perhaps I should write a blog about it here on QuakerQuaker.

perhaps I ought to say "ti" rather than you...I do like that in Welsh I can use ti/thee rather than chi/you, and naturally. It was one of the first things I noticed as I grappled with Welsh at primary school, ti was used for God, friends, family - and animals

thank you for a welcoming friend request. I shall wander around and do some reading, maybe some interacting!

Thank you, Ray, for your friend request - it did look rather sad when I logged on to QuakerQuaker for the first time to see the message: "You have no friends on QuakerQuaker"! Now I can truthfully declare that I do have one!

Sorry, Ray, I didn't keep you in touch with the Becoming Friends progress. I guess it must have gone all right, as Susan and I were formally welcomed into membership on the 25th day of the eighth month!

I've a new blog (see my profile page) where I've been trying to put down a few ideas on this journey. (I'm terrible at leaving comments, but am a regular Hay Quaker reader!)

I  don't think I've found the way to get the best out of QuakerQuaker yet. I often find myself a little at sea in these online communities, for some reason...

Hi Ray, thank you for the welcome, and hello from 'up the map' Shropshire!
