I am a Norwegian who has long been seeking a Christian, or more generally religious, community. One of my challenges in this search has been the fact that while I rarely doubt God, and in fact have a very deeply spiritual understanding of life, I struggle to clamp down my beliefs to a creed that fits in anywhere. I grew up in a liberal Christian family and was early on exposed to Christian contemplative practice and radical environmental and peace messages emerging from a Christian point of view. Although I feel at home in the Christian tradition and frequently use Christian language to express my beliefs, I often doubt whether I can call myself a Christian. This is something I have learnt to accept and am relaxed about, as I have fundamentally universalist understanding of God underpinning the particular Christian insights I grapple with. In searching for a religious community, however, this uncertainty has posed a problem as I feel it is dishonest to both myself and others to participate in a community that holds something for true and fundamental while I hold it for relative or have to interpret it in a very unconventional way to be able to accept it. As I also have spent several years in the peace movement and NGOs working with the environment and other matters of global justice, I naturally found the Quaker practice and faith very familiar and near to my heart. I intend to explore it further by attending Meetings for Worship and potentially seek full membership in the local Monthly Meeting.
