How What Science Tells Us About Gender Bias Illuminates the Value of the Light in Illuminating the Origin and Resolution of Schisms

Stunning article from the New York times on how unconscious gender bias against women impedes the progress of women in science. That this is happening 350 years after Quakers understood scripture to…Continue

Fierce Humility

"If God is to be a giver, he must first find a taker, but no one may be a taker of God's gifts except by his humility. Therefore, if God is to exercise his divine property by his gifts, he well may…Continue

About Me
I've been a Friend since 1968, was a CO (but not drafted) during the Vietnam era and, longing for a deeper experience of Silence/Light within, have been a dual lineage holder: (1) a devoted Quakerism expressed in Meetings in California, Montana, Wisconsin and for the last 25 years Durham Friends Meeting in North Carolina and (2) a devoted Buddhist practice first in the Rinzai Zen tradition, then vipassana, and now back to Zen. I do think that right view (belief) is essential and can be expressed in many forms, viz. Meister Eckhart and Dogen Zenji the founder of Soto Zen, and that the experience of the Light as Fox described it is underneath words is held in common universally. While Buddhist practice/experience and particularly over 15 months on silent retreat since 1991 has been very helpful to me, I feel called these days as a Quaker to an articulation of Truth in Christocentric language. I also wish for Friends a deeper experience of Silence as we all are on the same path toward awakening to the essential presence of God. QuakerQuaker seems a lovely place for deeping both the views and practices of Friends. Am grateful for its presence and the opportunity to participate. Am also happy to encourage f/Friends in growing in the Light at the boundary (false though it is) of Buddhism and Quakerism or even better how the practice of interior silence can enrich our lives as Friends-just send me a private email and we can set up a time to chat.
