Primitive Christianity Revived, Again
Jon Watts' new album Clothe Yourself in Righteousness is based around the stories of early Quakers who ran around naked as a sign, such as Solomon Eccles. Eccles is mentioned in the title track. I've been listening to the songs "Lets Get Naked" and "Clothe Yourself in Righteousness" together in a loop for the last few days. Earworm!
It has lines such as:
My plain dress addresses my respect like my reticence
My plain dress is designed as a sign of my settledness
With everything, everyone, every situation,
Yo it's all sacred, I dress to show that I'm grateful
A simple sign of faith, a simple song of solomon
A simple kind of way that I walk through this unpromised land
And the catchy chorus:
Clothe yourself in righteousness, you don't need that business suit
You don't need that law degree to be free or to speak the truth
I said clothe yourself in righteousness, you don't need expensive boots
You don't need a degree from seminary to know God loves you
It's an interesting album, but those songs in particular I think will resonate with anyone struggling with consumerism v. simplicity.
The song "Don't Doff Your Hat" is also an interesting one for Quaker history. He sings about George Fox busting into a church and preaching to the people and against the idea that the appointed preacher has authority over them, brings up Plain speech, and mentions the old "hat honour" tradition.
