ProNica is a Quaker-founded nongovernmental organization that assists in creating and sustaining programs by and for the Nicaraguan people. These projects are initiated by Nicaraguans and hold promise for grassroots growth, arise from Nicaraguan needs and tradition, and promote empowerment. Our priorities are on community cohesiveness, economic development, health, education, agriculture and women’s empowerment. ProNica nurtures cross-cultural solidarity through education of North Americans about Nicaragua’s history, culture, needs and current conditions.
Responsibilities
- Oversees all components of ProNica’s operations in Nicaragua within a long-range strategy to achieve the dual missions of grassroots project support and educating North Americans about Nicaragua.
- Reports directly to the Executive Director in St. Petersburg, Florida, United States, and works in partnership with the Consejo in Nicaragua, the Board of Directors in the US and the Managua Quaker Worship Group.
- Supports and evaluates project partners through regular personal visits; investigates and recommends new project partnerships and cessations.
- Oversees the international delegation program and staff, ensuring high quality educational experiences and safety.
- Manages the hospitality house, supervising the staff and ensuring quality guest experiences and safety.
- Participates in fundraising and development through presentations, writing, social media & networking; writes and solicits articles for quarterly newsletters.
- Analyzes changing organizational needs and participates in making adjustments to policies and procedures.
- Maintains working knowledge of practices and trends in nonprofit/NGO management.
- Stays abreast of Nicaragua’s political climate, culture, history and current events.
- Manages the maintenance and safety of the properties, vehicle and equipment.
- Ensures that administrative procedures are in place and implemented for financial reporting, filing, bookkeeping, processing mail, bill-pay, personnel records, taxes, etc.
- Travels to the US for meetings and fundraising, Quaker-based and otherwise.
- Conducts all work within the framework of Quaker Process.
Requirements
- Professional experience in international development work in Latin American. Progressive responsibility leading to management experience in Nicaragua preferred.
- Bachelor degree in global studies or other relevant field. Masters degree preferred.
- Fluency in English and Spanish with the ability to interpret and translate.
- Ability to freely travel between Nicaragua and the United States.
- Enjoys people, is outward-going in seeking and maintaining relationships.
- Strong organizational, written, communication and presentation skills.
- Works independently, manages time and meets deadlines.
- Ability to lead and motivate staff and volunteers.
- Works collaboratively as part of a team.
- Ability to drive a 4 wheel drive, standard transmission vehicle in Nicaragua and has a US or Nicaraguan driver license.
- Computer literacy including Word and Excel.
- Cultural sensitivity, tact and diplomacy.
- Understands the need to remain politically sensitive, as the ProNica representative.
- Relocation to Managua, Nicaragua. Already living in Nicaragua preferred.
- Compatibility with Quaker values that define the work of ProNica, including commitment to non-violence, equality, peace, and social justice and belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
Compensation and Benefits
- Lives and works in ProNica’s two-bedroom residence with detached office.
- Use of ProNica vehicle.
- Monthly salary ranging from $600 to $1,000 per month, commensurate with experience.
- Vacation, holidays, bonus and severance in accordance with Nicaraguan labor code.
- Health fund to supplement state health care.
- Up to one month’s training and transition guidance.
