Event Description

In this place:
Quakers, native Americans, and Africans in colonial Rhode Island, 1656-1800

Rhode Island is a region rich in Quaker history, slave-worked plantations, and Narragansett and Wampanoag homelands. Recently, Betsy Cazden has been doing extensive research on Quaker slave-owners, slave-traders, and abolitionists in colonial Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. In this course we will share the fruits of her research.

Using readings from Quaker sources, historical narrative written by Betsy, and visual aids, we will explore the complex multicultural history of the area and the various Quaker roles in that history between 1655 and 1800. Expect to have some of your assumptions about early Friends challenged. And that just might challenge your understanding of who we are today, as well!
