"I was beaten up by Quakers" says, Woody Allen.  A joke I have often referred to because one probably would be unlikely to be beaten up by Quakers prior to the days of the Internet. Now, it actually is a distinct possibility.  Let's all try to be awfully good!

Another amusing reference (television--not film) concerns the character once played by (sadly deceased) Phil Harman, the cartoon television announcer on the Simpsons. The character's resume includes playing a role in the film, "Calling All Quakers",  a sophisticated and humorous reference to the portrayal of Quakers in film.  Nevertheless, I got quite a kick out of it, and in certain situations I enjoy echoing the sentiment, "Calling All Quakers!"

I found these short video excerpts very amusing.  In general, I think the Friends have been replaced by the Amish in the popular imagination.

"Down to the Sea in Ships" - great film! Not much in the way of dialogue, having been made in 1922, but lots of romance and whaling. What's not to love?!

I have thought of a movie that has been missed.

I always feel blessed that the movie "Friendly Persuasion" came into the world the same year I did, 1956.   My favorite movie in the world, and "Thee I love" and the opening sequence so blissful.  Although I wasn't raised in a Quaker family, I found out recently that I did descend from a small boy traveling on the Lamb with William Penn.  Don't know if anyone believes in genetic memory, but when I first ran across the words of George Fox in my twenties how familiar they sounded!  My mother tells me that the song, "Thee I Love" was on the radio often when I was a baby .   .  . Perhaps there was an influence.  I never found this movie particularly ridiculous, but reassuring.  And then later, with the fallen and desperate and deeply wounded Quaker in "Seven Psychopaths' we see the Quaker character make the same decision that Gary Cooper's character did in "Friendly Persuasion",  "I ain't gonna fight, but I ain't gonna run".   Not ridiculous at all, but searingly serious testimonies.  Can I get an Amen?
