My own background had me starting at Multnomah Meeting in the late 1950s, then still very new (families Jump, Pinney, Martin, Urner...), and with ties to original Silicon Forest industrialists, who also tended to be conscientious objectors.  Doug Strain, although not a Quaker, was happy to sell his Electro-Scientific Instruments factory building to Multnomah Friends, for a dollar, when moving to bigger digs.

Our family then moved to Italy owing to dad's line of work (regional planner) and I didn't move back to Portland to raise a family of my own until the mid-1980s, by which time Multnomah had grown to the limits of its inherited factory building (since remodeled). 

The choices were (1) to find bigger digs (2) remodel even more (3) fragment into multiple Monthly Meetings (or at least one more).  Options (2) and (3) were both chosen, with our family helping to form Bridge City Friends Meeting, Portland's 2nd NPYM Monthly Meeting.
