Dogmarrel (written in Meeting today, sorry!)

God made music;
God made thought;
God made notions
to think we ought.

God made dogmas of
having no dogmas,
idols of duty and
hammers of beauty.

God made silence;
God made noise;
God provides
such varied toys!

God made food
and God made hunger
& wistful thoughts
of being younger.

God made laughter;
God made woe.
God winds us up
to help  us go.

Don't apologize. More inspired than some messages I've heard. And I like the nod to O. Nash at the end.

It expresses some aspects of humaning quite well, falls short on others.

I like the "It's all right if you do A, and also all right when you do ~A instead," perspective.

It's unfortunately flip on the "God gives you all this to amuse yourself with" side of things, ie the last line. The flip side of that is that God loves us as Himself. Hard to deny, hard to convincingly convey sometimes.

I didn't find the last line particularly flip. In my experience, God has a mighty fine sense of humor. We've been given a lot and it all comes down to how we use it.

I'm sure we're great windup toys; but we're far more than that.

I'm also sure that a lot of our efforts to force ourselves into some Ideal Way of Being are entirely ridiculous; we and God should laugh our heads off at live persons trying to behave as if we were properly dead. (Meanwhile, we've seen our own selves caught up in that same ambition from time to time. How to be relax into our utterly-vulnerable yet divinely-protected condition?)
