I'm reaching out to Friends in higher education with my recent Youtubes, which I'm free to distribute outside of Alphabet (Google) just as well.  A lot of my viewers don't ever watch Youtubes.

Scouting developed as a result of some folks wanting to abstract the fun part of military campaigning. Lets not perpetuate everything about the trenches of the guinea pig generations (whom we'll never forget), and keep the good parts.

Call it "Camping".  Invent "Scouting".  Both are by this time embraced by middle class suburbanites (among others), as "things to do".  Camping stores abound.

For others, camping is less by choice.  Capitalism has forced you to the margins.  You're illegally poor, or undocumented.  Social Darwinists have labeled you "unfit".

Likewise, from "camp" we get "campus" (or is it the other way around?).  Refugees live on Campus too, where Campus = Spaceship Earth, our Global U.  Some say Nuthouse.  Whatever.

Our family hosted students from the American University in Beirut (AUB), along with local Palestinians, as work camp leaders, AFSC.  That was in Ramallah long ago in the 1970s, when Bobby Fischer was playing Boris Spassky for the cold war chess championship.

We lived in tents and toiled together, building a swimming pool.  This was an innocent age, compared to now.  Our goat-sacrificing Palestinian construction crew was free to use dynamite, essential where solid rock is the obstacle.

In the afternoons, after hours of work, we'd visit Rukab's, the ice cream confectionery.

We got to tour in Palestinian refugee camps as a part of that duty.  "Quakers focus on refugees" was the message I took to heart.  They're akin to prison camps, for many.  Where else could you go?

Fast forward, and I came to see Quakers ("Friends") as a Diaspora Nation, refugees themselves, citizens of no nation insofar as these have become militarized.  Costa Rica seems to enjoy a concentration.

Many have UK or US passports, but are mentally a part of some underground.

We're refugees too.  Ever since Pennsylvania entered the Indian Wars.

American Transcendentalism, from New England, started up on its own two feet (Emerson, Thoreau...).  You'll find overlap with Quakers through Swedenborg, through Whitman... different narrators apply their various spins.  Margaret.  Her grand nephew.

I came to Quakerism by birth (in Chicago), and later by adult adoption (in Portland), and later came to Transcendentalism through Princeton, via Narnia and C.S. Lewis.

Now, I'm out there talking to refugees, offering a quintessentially American curriculum.  Hey there 4th graders!  Wanna be good scouts?  Happy campers?  Watch our films, projected against some bed sheet curtain... (shades of Occupy).
