Common Sense

One of my favorite sayings is "The only problem with common sense is that it's not common."  In the past I used to set aside a month to read the book of Proverbs.  The book has 31 chapters and I would read a chapter a day as part of my old testament reading.  There's a lot of common sense stuff in Proverbs and a lot of good advice as well that deserves meditation time.  When Jesus first became real and personal to me( or when I first experienced His reality) I decided to add a scripture…

War Studies

DSCF2938

That famous folk song that goes "ain't gonna study war no more" seems clearly in the back of the mind of our writer, Friend Wolf Mendl, as he opens with a defense: "Why would a Quaker, a subclass of Pacifist, study and/or play war games?"  Obviously, in order to end…

Revelation vs. Opionion

Quakers talk about continuing revelation.  I think it's important to define your terms if you are going to have a serious discussion on a topic.  The following scripture involves what I understand a revelation to be:

Mat 16:15  He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

Mat 16:16  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Mat 16:17  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not…

“It is Well with My Soul”: A Journey of Grief and Faith

In this powerful reflection ESR MDiv student Anne M. Hutchinson shares about the loss of her son.

Everything about that phone call felt wrong, even before I answered. It had started as an ordinary evening in April. I was in an empty classroom preparing for an English as a Second Language class that I was subbing for, when…

13th (movie review)

Friends gathered at the Stark Street meetinghouse for this public-invited showing of 13th, a widely distributed, award-winning documentary about the ongoing cultural and civil war in North America.

Although Lincoln declared the slaves free, an opening shot in his war to preserve the Union, the South was not on board with providing them with full human rights overnight.  Women couldn't vote yet either.  A system of apartheid…

From the center to the periphery: Abiding Quaker

In the ninth chapter of the book of John we are given a story of a healing, a bestowal of sight to one who has been blind from birth. Unlike many of the healing stories found in the first three books of the New Testament, this story is more than a simple interchange between Jesus, the healer, and the one who is healed, for the individual’s   restoration to health is…

What should I do?

Originally published on Quaker Universalist Conversations (1/1/17).

I had a dream a few days ago, one of those rare wholly unambiguous dreams. It was a flying dream, but that’s not the relevant feature, just a plot device.

I was returning…

On Competition

Winning by cheating isn’t the same as simply winning. They may look the same. They may be rewarded with the same sets of prizes and glory. But they are not equal indicators of ability, even though prizes and glory might obscure that.

Winning matters. Merging into…
